The conference’s theme, “Shaping the Future” was divided into three categories: Shaping the Future of Shell, Shaping Your Future, and Shaping the Future of the Community—the latter one delivered by Sonia herself. Her dissertation there highlighted the importance, and impact, of major corporate citizens interacting within the community for the generation of social advancement and professional opportunities, in this case specifically directed to the Latino community. The SHEN network of around 1,050 members gathers annually at a central location in Houston to take learning from internal and external leaders and apply lessons acquired immediately to their professional and personal lives. One participant in the event remarked: “Sonia’s energetic and radiantly positive attitude permeated to the audience in her keynote address to Shell’s Hispanic Employee Network (SHEN). Sonia’s impacting presentation made it very vivid as to how we all can help Shape the Future for our Community. I near came to tears when I heard her personal story and how, having been through tough circumstances she used her experiences to create something good for those around her. She is a great representative of our Latino community!
